Can an immoral person be regarded as a true patriot? The framers of
this
republic didn't think so. The Father of the American Revolution, Sam
Adams,
said, "He who is void of virtuous attachments in private life is, or
very
soon will be, void of all regard for his country. There is seldom an
instance of a man guilty of betraying his country, who had not before
lost
the feeling of moral obligations in his private connections. ..."
Our form of government is totally dependent upon "each and every one
of us
to control ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God," James
Madison said. John Adams agreed. He said, "Our Constitution was made
only
for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the
government
of any other."
William Penn warned, "If men will not be governed by God, they will
be
ruled by tyrants." Patrick Henry said virtually the same thing. He
declared, "It is when people forget God that tyrants forge their
chains."
Freedom-loving people must by nature be God-fearing people.
Current events suggest that America has forgotten this fundamental
truth.
Intoxicated with hedonism, we not only tolerate Clinton's Mafia-style
brutality; we applaud it. Americans applauded when those people at Mr.
Carmel burned. They cheered when federal agents seized little Elian
Gonzalez at gunpoint. It doesn't bother us that Clinton's merciless mad
dogs victimize innocent women. Even the national press looks the other
way
when one of its own is pummeled by Clinton's thuggery.
I used to marvel at how the German people could support a man like
Adolf
Hitler. When Hitler came to power, Germany was a republic. Furthermore,
they had a rich Christian history. The Germans were cultivated,
law-abiding
people. How they could follow a man like Hitler was a mystery to me --
until
now.
Are we not like Germany of old when we applaud as federal Storm
Troopers
kick down our fellow citizen's doors during the night to carry out the
unlawful orders of a ruthless ruler? Do we really think that it can only
happen to our neighbors, and not to us?
America is no longer ruled by the U.S. Constitution. We are ruled by
brute
force. Clinton has effectively neutered congress and the courts. He is
an
authority unto himself. He is accountable to no one. What is worse is
that
the vast majority of the American people seem to find this palatable.
Some have suggested that Bill Clinton will never leave office. They
propound that he will create a national crisis and then declare himself
to
be the only one who is capable of solving the problem. They believe he
will
suspend elections and seize authoritarian control.
For the sake of discussion, who among us would resist such a
tyrannical
move? Would his fellow Democrats? As for the Republicans, about all we
could expect from them is that they would conduct hearings on the
matter.
Would our career-craving military brass stand in his way? Would the
media
protest? They already serve as Clinton's Propaganda Department.
It appears to me that the same majority of Americans who have
supported
every corrupt and debauched action taken by this corrupt and debauched
man
would continue to support him no matter what he did. We have traded our
morals for a burgeoning stock market, and we have traded our faith in
God
for a boy who would be king.
