“The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained.”
– George Washington

President Bush announced this week that he is supporting a marriage protection amendment to the United States Constitution. Those who believe in the sacred foundations of marriage lauded Mr. Bush’s willingness to enter the present controversy by boldly voicing his support of the man-woman institution of marriage that has been at the core of civilization.

“After more than two centuries of American jurisprudence, and millennia of human experience,” President Bush stated, “a few judges and local authorities are presuming to change the most fundamental institution of civilization. Their actions have created confusion on an issue that requires clarity.”

“On a matter of such importance, the voice of the people must be heard,” he continued. “Marriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence of society. Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all. Today I call upon the Congress to promptly pass, and to send to the states for ratification, an amendment to our Constitution defining and protecting marriage as a union of man and woman as husband and wife. …”

The homosexual community immediately decried Mr. Bush for supporting traditional marriage. “To use the Constitution to discriminate against our families is un-American, shameful and divisive,” said Human Rights Campaign President Cheryl Jacques.

You can bet that the issue of traditional marriage – which is not discrimination, rather a safeguard of established and age-old values – is sure to become a centerpiece of the 2004 presidential campaign, with Democrats attempting to falsely portray those who believe in the sanctity of marriage as hate-filled bigots.

The proposed Federal Marriage Amendment introduced by Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., states: “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.”

If this simple but powerful amendment becomes law, it would permanently protect traditional marriage from activist judges and politically correct activists from ever achieving their goal of attaining homosexual marriage rights. The traditions of our Founders would be secured.

Sen. John Kerry, the probable Democrat challenger to Mr. Bush, is on the other side of this critical issue. In 1996, he was one of only 14 senators who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which was signed by Bill Clinton.

“No matter what the senator says today,” warned Gary Bauer, chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, “there is no other way to interpret his vote against DOMA except as a vote FOR homosexual ‘marriage.’”

The issue goes far deeper than homosexual marriage, though. Homosexual-rights advocates are on a relentless quest to gain governmental and social endorsement of their lifestyle(s). And our children are their targets!

CNSNews.com reported on Feb. 9 (“Same-Sex Marriage Debate Moves Into Schools”) that homosexual-rights activists are invading our public schools to secure gullible disciples of their dangerous social agenda.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has printed a “curriculum guide” for public-school teachers that presents a six-point lesson plan that is designed to convince students that homosexual relationships are the equivalent of traditional man-woman relationships.

“The lesson plans range from discussing the ‘historical parallels’ of same-sex marriage to providing students with the chance to read books about homosexual relations and then consider what it would be like to be in a same-sex wedding,” CNSNews reported.

Sandi Martinez, the Massachusetts state director of Concerned Women for America., told CNSNews, “Quite often parents aren’t allowed to even know what’s going on.”

Furthermore, Linda Harvey of Mission America has written an astonishing article, “The Top 20 Skirmishes in the Battle Over Homosexuality in the Schools,” which details how students across the nation are being inundated with pro-homosexual material. At the same time, students of faith are often ridiculed in these classes. (Visit the website to read the article.)

It behooves parents – particularly Christian parents – to ensure that their children are not being indoctrinated at school with information that completely counters what is taught at home.

At this very moment, we stand on a cultural battlefield.

Christians must be prepared to fearlessly (and immediately!) invade the culture with the Gospel of Christ to counter the godless effort to bring radical social change to our nation. This effort has no end because these social extremists will never be satisfied; if they achieve homosexual marriage there is literally no telling what they will want next.

It is readily apparent that people of faith (and others who adhere to our nation’s founding values) have lost our influence in increasing parts of the public square. Christians simply must be willing to take a stand for righteousness in America, no matter the cost.

Here’s the first simple step we all need to immediately take.

Call today (202-224-3121 is the Capitol Switchboard number) to urge your congressman/congresswoman and two senators to support the Federal Marriage Amendment. When calling the number, simply request the office of the lawmaker with whom you wish to speak. You will then be transferred to a spokesperson for that congressional member. Then considerately state that you hope he/she will support the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Or go to the Campaign for Working Families website to send an e-mail to your congressional representatives. Click on “Congressional Directory,” then click on your state to find your Senate members and House member. Remember, be polite and to-the-point when writing.

Finally, please go to www.onemanonewoman.com right now if you have not signed my Petition of Support for the Federal Marriage Amendment. This petition, which hundreds of thousands of people have signed, will help us marshal support for President Bush in protecting traditional marriage through the Congress.
