The number of new jobs in the U.S. has increased dramatically, but many political figures are complaining that although the jobs are growing, the manufacturing jobs are not growing quickly enough.
But these are not just “burger flipping” jobs. In the past six months, over half of the new jobs created were service industry jobs. And according the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the wages paid on these new jobs is higher than the average manufacturing job created! That is good news for wage earners.
Politicians and others who focus solely on manufacturing jobs are missing a key point: the entire world is migrating toward a service-based economy and away from a manufacturing-based society. It is not that all the U.S. jobs are going overseas … manufacturing jobs are declining worldwide!
Take Mainland China for example. Despite massive foreign investment, they actually experienced a 15 percent decline in manufacturing jobs between 1995 and 2002, compared to an 11 percent decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. Brazil lost 20 percent of their manufacturing jobs during the same period.
A century ago, a giant migration occurred in North America from a farm-based economy to a manufacturing-based economy. Today, the migration is occurring toward a service-based economy. Business and manufacturing are becoming more efficient and productivity gains are being implemented worldwide, resulting in a growth of information and service-based jobs worldwide.
The prophet Daniel wrote, “It is He who changes the times and epochs; He removes and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding” Daniel 2:21 NASB). Throughout history, times have changes. Jobs and entire industries have been created … and disappeared.
We need to understand and adapt to change to be successful in the future.
