MoveOn.org, the well-financed anti-Republican lobby, begins airing a TV commercial nationwide today that portrays Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist blowing up the Capitol in a spoof of the new “Star Wars” movie.
With a showdown set in the U.S. Senate over judicial nominees and Democrats referring to a proposed rules change to permit up-or-down votes on President Bush’s picks as the “nuclear option,” MoveOn.org, the group supported by international financier George Soros, has created a TV ad in a last-ditch effort to tilt public opinion against the Republicans.
“This week, ‘Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith’ opens in theaters nationwide,” explains a message on the group’s website. “And weirdly enough, the plot of what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest films in movie history revolves around a scheming senator who, seduced by visions of absolute power, transforms a democratic republic into an empire.”
The commercial opens with the screen filled with stars. A la “Star Wars,” type begins rolling up the screen fading off into the distance. An announcer intones: “For 200 years, the Senators and the fair judges, were keepers of peace and justice in the republic until… ”
Laser weapons are seen firing from Washington government buildings. A hooded figure strides toward the camera, with robotic figures in judges’ robes following in lockstep.
The announcer continues: ” … one Senator, seduced by a dark vision of absolute power, seeks to destroy this fabled order, replacing fair judges with far right clones. To do this, he’s ready to use a nightmare weapon known as the ‘Nuclear Option’. ”
The hooded figure is revealed to be Frist – laughing maniacally.
The spots ends with the concluding message: “Stop Senator Frist. Save our courts. Save the Republic. MoveOn PAC is responsible for the content of this advertisement.”
During the 2004 presidential election campaign, MoveOn.org caused a stir with a TV commercial comparing Bush to Hitler.
