A doctor has seen kidnapped Israeli Defense Forces Cpl. Gilad Shalit and treated his injuries, according to Israeli television.
CNN, which could not independently confirm the report, said no details were given on Shalit’s injuries or condition.
Israeli ground troops this week entered the Gaza Strip in response to an attack Sunday by Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist group on a major Israeli military station that resulted in Shalit’s kidnapping.
Israel has troops in southern Gaza and has delayed action in the north, with troops prepared to enter.
Diplomatic talks are under way as Israeli warplanes make targeted strikes, including an attack that destroyed the Palestinian interior minister’s office and a strike against a car carrying terrorists. Israel also reported it killed a local leader of the terrorist group Islamic Jihad in an attack on a terrorist cell.
Israeli defense officials say the abducted soldier, a 19-year-old Israeli-French citizen, is being held in Khan Yunis, a large city in central Gaza.
A senior defense official told WorldNetDaily it was Israel’s failure to respond forcefully to the Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza the past 10 months that led to Sunday’s Hamas operation.
Today, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh charged Israel’s offensive is aimed at toppling the Hamas-led government.
“We read what is happening in terms of aggression on our people, and that it is going beyond the abducted soldier,” Haniyeh said in a sermon at a Gaza mosque.
“This comprehensive aggression shows there is a premeditated plan against the people and the legitimate government and the elected” Palestinian Legislative Council, he said.
Haniyeh insisted Hamas has “contacts to end the crisis in the right way,” but the Israeli military operation “complicates matters.”
“We demand the end of the aggression on the Palestinian people so matters won’t worsen, and [Israel] should stop attacking the Palestinian political system and democracy.”
The U.N. Security Council scheduled an emergency debate today with the Palestinians seeking a resolution condemning Israel’s actions.
Yesterday, Israel detained eight Palestinian cabinet ministers.
