WND readers, like others horrified by the unprovoked campus attack that left 32 victims dead in Virginia, have decided they may want to be able to defend themselves, putting "Shooting Back: The Right and Duty of Self Defense" by Charl Van Wyk in the top spot this week at Shop.WND.com.
Van Wyk's book talks about the choice to defend oneself and others against the unprovoked and unpredictable attacks in today's world. He used a handgun to defend churchgoers in South Africa against an attack by terrorists with automatic weapons, and is credited with saving many lives that day.
It was just a week ago when Cho Seung-Hui attacked students and faculty at Virginia Tech, killing 32. Van Wyk wrote in a special commentary for WND such attacks "are far more likely to occur in areas that have been designated as gun-free zones."
"Worldwide, office buildings, hospitals, convenience stores, TV studios, chain restaurants and day-care centers have all been targets of homicidal maniacs. Mass murders have taken place in such places after they have been declared gun-free zones," he said.
He cited a 1999 study that showed "mass shootings occur less often in areas where responsible citizens may carry weapons."
"Do mass shootings ever occur in police stations, shooting ranges or at gun shows? Mass murderers select soft targets for their acts of violence. Expecting a suicidal individual to honor a law prohibiting firearms is sheer utopian fantasy," he said.
During 1997-2002, 32 students were killed by gunshots at U.S. schools, while in Israel, where teachers are armed, there were no such attacks, he noted.
In second place – and on the same subject – was "Armed Response" by David Kenik, which Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation described as a "must-read" for every gun owner in the nation.
"Defending the family against a terrorist or criminal is not the same as shooting a paper target, thus firearm enthusiasts need direction if they are to be successful at their defensive goals. They will set off on the right track and find everything they need in this book," said Gabe Suarez, an internationally recognized authority on reality-based combat training.
"Armed Response" is a comprehensive guide for using firearms for defense before, during, and after a life-threatening assault. It contains "valuable real-life lessons about preparing to face a lethal threat, winning a gun fight, and surviving the ensuing court battle that can not be found outside of expensive tactical schools."
In third place is "Stop the Presses!" by Joseph Farah, WorldNetDaily founder and editor.
It is not just the story of how he founded WND.com and became a pioneer on the New Media frontier, it tells of the new wave of media superstars who have forever changed the way Americans get their news and express their views.
"Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Matt Drudge...these are just some of the New Media names that old-school media like ABC News has acknowledged 'rule our world.' This revolution has shaken the foundations of the mainstream media, eroding its ability to control the flow of information...and with it, the power to control the lives of millions around the world," according to the description.
"Joseph Farah was not just 'present at the creation' of the new media revolution, he helped instigate it. 'Stop the Presses!' is a fascinating and freewheeling look at how a harmonic convergence of politics, personalities and technology has forever changed the way Americans interact with their government, their fellow citizens, and the world," said Rush Limbaugh, the nationally syndicated talk show host.
