An Indiana school district has declined to recognize the federal holiday that honors George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other presidents, and a school spokeswoman couldn't really say why.
"We were off for Martin Luther King Day, we get the 4th of July, Memorial, Veterans Day," Angela Phyllis, the secretary to the chief academic officer at the Fort Wayne Community School District, told WND.
"It's (President's Day) just been in our teachers' contract for years," she said. She said if Good Friday falls during spring break, the teachers get President's Day off; if it doesn't, they get Good Friday, and then there's no formal recognition of President's Day.
Some parents weren't impressed with whatever reasoning the district may use.
"My objection is with them sacrificing Presidents Day instead of MLK day," said a father who told WND he didn't want to be identified out of concerns for any retaliation to his child or children.
"Though I think MLK did some great things, I do think he and his legacy [are] quickly surpassing that of the founders and I feel our former presidents are being greatly disrespected in the growing world of political correctness and liberalism that has infected our public school systems nationwide," the concerned parent said.
"What happened today in Fort Wayne made it glaringly apparent, even with the spin they attempted," he continued.
"My wife and I are deeply concerned about this and just wanted other parents here in Fort Wayne and around the country to be aware of what is happening," he said.
He said besides a holiday recognizing King, there was a week of study on his life and accomplishments.
President's Day is set aside by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to recognize specifically the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, although neither is that exact day, as well as other presidents.
The school district spokeswoman told WND she didn't know exactly why the recognition of President's Day, or lack of recognition, developed as it did.
But she said schools are allowed to do special events in honor of the day if they choose to do so individually.
