The iReagan app for iPhone
America’s iPhone users can now boast the voice speaking from their device is none other than that of “The Great Communicator,” Ronald Reagan.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., has launched the first-ever iPhone and iPod Touch application to feature content on an American president drawn from the National Archives.
The app, which is offered for free, brings to Apple devices photos of the 40th president, quotes, full-length speeches – including his famous “Tear down this wall!” and “Evil Empire” speeches – and photo content from the Reagan Library, featuring its currently displayed “Christmas Around the World” exhibit.
Furthermore, the Reagan Library has announced it plans a whole series of apps on the former president.
“This is really only the first step in many technological outreaches,” the Library’s Executive Director Duke Blackwood told the San Francisco Chronicle. “What we hope to do is education, which is very challenged today. … So we’re working on the next step – to have a classroom on the iPod.”
The Reagan Library is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. It houses President Reagan’s Air Force One, 63 million pages of Reagan’s personal papers and over 60,000 gifts and artifacts chronicling the lives of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. It also serves as the final resting place of the former president.
The Library’s “Christmas Around the World” exhibit includes decorated trees that represent the holiday traditions of each of the 26 countries Reagan visited while in office, as well as a White House Tree. The exhibit includes personal gifts from dignitaries who met with President Reagan and participated in the tradition of a gift exchange.
Also on display are a collection of hand-crafted menorahs that were given to President Reagan while in the White House.
The entire exhibit is represented in the iReagan App, available for free from the app store on iPhone and iPod Touch or from the app store at iTunes.com.
