Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.
A leading Republican congressman has developed a simple explanation of how much money $3.73 trillion – the amount President Obama has proposed the federal government spend next year – represents.
“Bill Gates? You could buy him 69 times over,” quips Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., “[or] buy every Wal-Mart in the world 15 times.”
“You could buy the [New York] Yankees – love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re America’s most expensive baseball team;” he adds, “you could buy them 2,331 times.”
McHenry, a GOP House deputy whip and member of the House Budget, Financial Services and Oversight Committees, created a simple, whiteboard presentation explaining the enormity of Obama’s proposed budget and posted a video of it on YouTube and his Facebook page.
“Enough is enough!” McHenry comments. “This kind of spending only means higher taxes in the future. We have to stop kicking the can down the road; our economy simply can’t afford it.”
The video itself can be seen below:
Among other potential uses of Obama’s proposed $3,728,686,000,000 budget McHenry listed include the following:
The total mount, McHenry explains, represents 25.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product.
“President Obama ignored the warnings of both liberal and conservative economists, his own fiscal commission, and the message voters sent in November; and that is that we have to cut spending in order to create jobs,” McHenry states in the video. “Instead he sent us a budget that raises taxes and adds $13 trillion to the national debt.”
