When it comes to a possible run for the presidency by Donald Trump, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is apparently not among those in the real-estate tycoon’s camp, citing Trump’s push to make sure President Obama is constitutionally eligible for the job.

During an interview on CNN’s “American Morning” today, Cantor was asked, “Would you support a Donald Trump candidacy, especially with all this birther talk?”

The Republican from Virginia said, “No, I don’t think he is really serious when we launch a – see a campaign launched on the birther issue.”

CNN host Kiran Chetry then asked, “But don’t you get nervous? You want to defeat the president in 2012. And you want a Republican to take over the White House. Is Donald Trump your best hope right now?

“No, I don’t think so,” Cantor responded.

Trump has recently skyrocketed to the top of several polls regarding 2012 presidential challengers to Obama.

When asked why he thought Trump was doing so well, Cantor said: “You know, it’s very early on in the political season. I think that there are some very weighty issues that we’re going to have to tackle. What the American people are going to look for in a candidate for president in 2012 is I think someone who can be honest with the American people and face facts as far as the debt problem is concerned and lay out there what we’re trying to do as Republicans in Congress, and say it’s – the time is up for kicking the can down the road, and we’ve got to prescribe a solution to fix the problems we’re facing.”

In January, Cantor appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where host David Gregory badgered the Republican leader on Obama’s eligibility.

Gregory said, “This is a leadership moment here. There are elements of this country who question the president’s citizenship, who think that his birth certificate is inauthentic. Will you call that what it is, which is crazy talk?”

Cantor responded, “David I don’t think it’s nice to call anyone crazy, OK?”

Cantor went on to say that he thinks President Obama is a citizen of the U.S., and he did not think it should be an issue.
