“We need to open the program today by congratulating President Obama,” Rush Limbaugh said this week.
Americans tuned in on Monday to hear Rush Limbaugh’s reaction to the killing of Osama bin Laden. With his “congratulations” to Obama, Rush didn’t disappoint – but he did leave some tone-deaf media elites confused.
But, you see, Limbaugh was obviously being sarcastic – and as usual, his detractors fell for it.
As a matter of fact, Rush declared, Obama “owes us an apology.”
“Waterboarding of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed produced the intel that led to the successful assault on that glorified hut in which Osama Bin Laden was living. All of this produced by techniques and policies steadfastly opposed by this current president,” Limbaugh said. “The president gives a – some would say illegal – kill order. We are proscribed because of an executive order from President Ford to assassinate foreign leaders, but nevertheless this president gives a kill order for a target in a private residence in a country, a friendly country invaded by us without their knowledge where there are women and children present, by the way. In the course of this attack, upwards of 22 foreign nationals are either killed or captured, including the targeted unarmed foreign leader.
“Then, it is reported that the president ordered the target’s body respectfully tossed into the ocean, all of which is done without any United Nations resolution or authorization of any kind,” Limbaugh continued. “And not only does our president not apologize for any of these actions, he brags about what he did and claims that it was all his idea from the get-go, and our media celebrates him as courageous.”
The reaction to that particular radio segment was so positive that he posted the audio for free on his website.
On a lighter note, Rush announced that he was adding a new T-shirt to his “Club Gitmo” merchandise line, which would read: “Obama killed Osama – and 10 teenage Somali pirates, 3 Gadhafi grandkids, 2 Osama wives, the U.S. economy and got a Peace Prize for doing it” (FREE audio).
Michael Savage reacted to the killing of bin Laden by saying (http://www.trn1.com/uploads/automp3/savagesegments/Savage_05-02-2011_HR1.mp3″>FREE audio), “Now some will ask, and I am not one of them, where is Osama’s death certificate, but we should take a collective deep breath and celebrate the U.S. Navy SEALs and tip our hat to the Obama administration for a job well done. He did something that Bush didn’t do, that Bush wanted to do, that he said he would do, and we have to give him credit for that, and I’m very happy today, frankly, that the Hitler of our time is dead.”
Throughout the week, Savage returned to the theme of Obama’s death. At one point he remarked that the official story is always changing and expressed suspicions about the facts surrounding the raid, saying, “The whole thing stinks to high heaven” (FREE audio).
Hannity produced a stirring special segment to mark the killing of Osama bin Laden, which began with an audio montage of eyewitness reactions to 9/11 set to patriotic music (FREE audio).
Hannity declared, “We sent a message to the rest of the world. If you kill our brothers and sisters, our fellow Americans, you are going to pay for it with your life. It may takes weeks, years or almost a decade – but we are going to hunt you down, we’re going to find you and we are going to kill you. The spontaneous eruption of celebration around the world was just a joy to see.”
In the days to come, Hannity echoed the sentiments of other commentators: “We’ve had days of shifting information, and they can’t seem to get their story straight.”
Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld and Rudy Giuliani joined Hannity during the week to debate the impact the event would have on the 2012 presidential election.
Levin insisted that Obama owed former Vice President Dick Cheney an apology, for persistently moralizing about “torture” and “Gitmo” during his campaign – but then taking credit for the killing of bin Laden, which was only possible thanks to information extracted during “enhanced interrogation” (FREE audio).
A caller who claimed to be “former Special Ops” told Levin he suspects the raid “didn’t go down as planned” and the White House is covering up what really happened (FREE audio).
Ginni Thomas interviewed Levin for The Daily Caller, asking him to offer his advice to Republican leaders on raising the debt limit, and other issues. The outspoken Levin was happy to cooperate (FREE video).
When the inevitable controversies began to swirl around reports of Osama’s death, Laura Ingraham called on the White House to release photographs of the terrorist’s corpse: “Where’s the picture? Is there anybody else out there wanting to see the picture of Bin Laden’s head? I do! I want the picture, I want the bullet hole. I want all of it. That doesn’t make me some kind of ghoul. I just want to see it. I want to see the photo. I want to know that the DNA matched. Why are we announcing this before the DNA match was done? Does anyone get that? That all seems just … do the DNA match and then just tell us we got the right guy.”
She also urged listeners to beware the Democrats’ renewed calls for “unity” (FREE audio): “Beware the call for unity. Beware the call for bipartisanship. … Sometimes disunity is good for us. I think a lot of the slave owners wanted unity behind the idea that certain people were really property. I think of people who believed in segregation, they liked unity around their ideas. And a lot of people who believe that we can spend our way out of an economic disaster, they certainly would like unity.”
Ingraham’s guests this week included Donald Rumsfeld, Dr. Zuhdi Jasser and Juan Williams, who debated Laura on the merits of releasing Osama’s photos (FREE audio).
“Please tell me you’re not a terrorist!”
Glenn Beck ribbed one of his favorite authors, Brad Thor, over a photo of Thor wearing a keffiyeh, the black and white checked scarf favored by radical Muslims and their “useful idiot” sympathizers in the West (FREE audio).
Beck also told listeners the story of Lt. Michael Murphy. This weekend, a warship will be christening in his name as a testament to his bravery and self-sacrifice in Afghanistan (FREE audio).
And now, from the left side of the dial …
Brian Maloney of the Radio Equalizer caught Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in barefaced act of historical revisionism, when he told a progressive radio host that “his grandfather [w]as a paragon of virtue who stood up for American patriotism while others parked profits overseas to evade taxes” (FREE audio).
Of course, it’s common knowledge that Joseph P. Kennedy, the family patriarch, was a rum runner during Prohibition who, among other things, brought his mistress – actress Gloria Swanson – on his honeymoon with RFK Jr’s grandmother!
“In RFK Jr’s convenient world,” writes Maloney, “circa-1929 stock market manipulation, rum-running and political trickery are apparently fabrications concocted by enemies for personal gain. Is this mere brain decay, or a deliberate attempt to rewrite family history?”
One of the left’s favorite truisms is that people like Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck “can’t possibly believe what they’re saying.” One wonders how progressives can square that deeply held conviction with these blatantly false statements by one of their own.
