On Sunday, July 31, CNN featured a video presentation entitled “Do You Speak Christian? The Language of Christianity.”
Basically the idea presented was that the meanings of words shift, allowing believers to draw a less literal meaning from the Bible, that believing in the literal words of Scripture requires “mental gymnastics.”
Yes, I speak Christian. I speak of biblical Christianity.
For many years now, I have been warning believers that we must stand firmly on the truths of Scripture, based on its plain language. Even so, it seems that many Christians are actually ashamed of what they believe. They have been intimidated by ungodly pseudo-intellectuals. While they stand idly by, the proponents of other world religions boldly uphold what they believe, with zero tolerance for those who would even think to question it. Christianity had better wake up and start standing for the faith once delivered to the saints; the faith recorded in the plain and literal language of the Bible.
The CNN feature was so bold as to state that “in the Bible, salvation isn’t generally about the afterlife; that it can refer to other things.”
While it is true that salvation can refer to other things, the main theme of the New Testament is salvation from the penalty of sin: “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
With simple and easy to understand words 1 John 3:4 literally tells us that “sin is the transgression of the law.” Those laws can be found in Exodus Chapter 20. The Ten Commandments were written in stone by our Creator, and the meaning of those words will never shift.
So how is it possible for Christianity to be challenged on every front, and yet seem so defenseless?
I believe that the main reason is because the theologians have failed to tell the truth about what Christianity really is – to stand on the literal words of Scripture. For thousands of years they have presented traditions that violate the covenant of our Creator. Those traditions cannot be defended; and now, when challenged, the theologians do not have a leg to stand on. They wrest the Scriptures to their own destruction and to the destruction of those who blindly follow them. They have built their houses upon their own shifting sand.
Contemporary Christianity is far from the faith of those who walked and talked with Christ. Our adversaries know that and so do the Christian theologians themselves. They have been caught in their own web, and there is only one way out. That is to finally start telling the truth. Only the truth will set them free.
The CNN presentation ends by stating, “The trick about language is that words seem so solid, so capable of locking in our ideas permanently; but the meanings of words shift and transform over the years.”
Whose words will you believe? The shifty words of CNN that subject Christianity to the interpretation of its adversaries, or the literal words of Scripture that lead us to Christ?
