On Sept 19, Fox News reported:
“President Obama’s hometown newspaper has some startling advice for the commander in chief – quit while you’re behind.
“Citing the president’s record-low approval ratings and unease in the Democratic base, a Chicago Tribune editorial writer recommended over the weekend that Obama need not feel obligated to run for a second term.
“Steve Chapman said that with Obama facing the prospect of a double-dip recession and, if he wins re-election, a gridlocked second term, it might be better to call it a presidency and let someone else – maybe Hillary Clinton – carry the Democratic mantle in the 2012 election.
“Chapman said the high unemployment already makes it difficult for Obama to run. He noted that his recently unveiled jobs bill has not yet lit a brushfire of support, and that his party just lost two special elections in Congress.
“Obama was the first Democratic candidate for president ever endorsed by The Chicago Tribune. Chapman was on the board at the time.”
This came on the same day Ralph Nader and 45 other liberal leaders announced a proposal to challenge President Obama in the Democratic Party’s presidential primaries in 2012.
They seek to have a slate of six candidates run against Obama, each representing a field in which the president has never clearly staked a progressive claim or where he has drifted to the right.
“Without debates by challengers inside the Democratic Party’s presidential primaries, the liberal/majoritorian agenda will be muted and ignored,” said Nader. “The one-man Democratic primaries will be dull, repetitive and draining of both voter enthusiasm and real bright lines between the two parties that excite voters.”
From the president of the Edmund Burke Institute and Washington Times columnist Jeffrey Kuhner, an August column headlined, “Now that his incompetence is obvious, Obama should resign,” which includes the following:
“America’s economy is in free-fall. Growth is anemic. The stock market is collapsing. Real unemployment – combining the high jobless rate with rampant underemployment – is higher than 16 percent. Manufacturing is dead. Deficits, debt and government spending are at record levels. Our credit rating has been downgraded for the first time in history. The trade deficit has exploded to the highest in years. A possible Great Depression haunts the land. Primarily one man is to blame: President Obama.
“Mr. Obama has racked up more than $4 trillion in debt. His massive spending stimulus has failed and made the jobless situation worse. Before his stimulus package was passed in February 2009, the unemployment rate stood at 7.8 percent. Today it is at 9.1 percent – and rising.”
From nationally syndicated columnist Donald Lambro, the headline: “Obama numbers that add up to one term: Polls say Americans ready to toss president leading them into recession again.”
Columnist Emmett Tyrrell notes:
“On the left, there is Maureen Dowd in the New York Times quoting an anonymous Democratic senator who laments that ‘we are watching him turn into Jimmy Carter right before our eyes.’
“Columnist William McGurn and Bret Stephens made similar comparisons on the same day, Monday, and in the same newspaper, the Wall Street Journal. Mr. Stephens is bold: ‘I just think the president is not very bright.'”
And finally, an email from the Waterman Report as follows:
“Fascinating audio now circulating across the Internet suggests top-ranked Democratic Party officials giving consideration to a Barack one-term-only scenario.
“A video clip now at the beginnings of going viral is circulating the Internet. Its contents reveal strategists within the Democratic Party now openly telling their re-election clients to stay away from President Obama if they hope to have any chance at re-election, as well as the even more blockbuster scenario of party officials approaching the president himself with an ‘LBJ scenario’ in which Barack Obama would announce to the nation that he will not seek a second term as president of the United States.”
