A special event has been scheduled across the nation on Nov. 12 that focuses on whether President Ronald Reagan’s famous prophecy about the United States is true.
He said, “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be one nation gone under.”
Now Christian leaders from a wide range of backgrounds and areas of expertise have joined together to create the OneNationUnderGodEvent.com on that Saturday.
“We’ve lost sight of our great heritage as a nation founded on biblical truth, and the consequences are dire: Schools are failing, the divorce rate is climbing, and our society is rife with scandal and corruption. It’s time to reclaim our biblical heritage and bring God back to the center of American life. Where do we start?” promoters explain on their website.
So they have planned events at homes and churches from California to Connecticut to Florida that will feature a special two-hour DVD of top American thinkers and political leaders concerned about that very issue.
The dispute erupted into the headlines only weeks ago, when NBC, in promoting its coverage of a golf tournament, edited “under God” from a recording on the Pledge of Allegiance.
The network’s subsequent apology:
Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association said it was astonishing that NBC would take such action. At that time he called on Americans to express their thoughts directly to NBC.
Now the new event, sponsored by the Home School Legal Defense Association and others, features speakers such as David Barton of WallBuilders, the author of numerous best-selling books and an expert on the nation’s moral foundation.
Barton’s exhaustive research has made him an expert in historical and constitutional issues. He serves as a consultant to state and federal legislators, has participated in several cases at the Supreme Court, has been involved in the development of social studies standards for numerous states and has helped produce popular history textbooks now used in schools across the nation.
Another speaker will be James Dobson, the founder and president of Family Talk, which produces his popular “Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson” radio program. He’s authored more than 30 books about the preservation of the family, which he calls the fundamental building block of the nation, and has written “The New Dare to Discipline,” “Love for a Lifetime,” “The New Strong-Willed Child,” “When God Doesn’t Make Sense,” “Bringing up Boys,” “Bringing up Girls” and many others.
Also speaking will be Newt Gingrich, the architect of the “Contract with America” that led to a Republican surge in Congress in 1994. He’s authored dozens of books and is active on a wide range of projects, including, most recently, the U.N. Task Force, a bipartisan congressional effort to reform the United Nations.
Also speaking will be Timothy Johnson, an adjunct professor at Shaw University; Bob McEwen, former congressman and senior adviser to a national law firm; Live Action founder Lila Rose; Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, identified by CNN as the “Leader of the Hispanic Evangelical movement”; and John Stemberger, a Florida attorney who has worked in the pro-family movement for more than 25 years.
The event will provide information on how “to view history and current events in light of God’s Word, and how to take action that aligns with His truth.”
Events are scheduled for churches in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington as well as homes all over.
