(NEWS) — Warm Antarctic weather has drastically cut the number of flights to Australia’s $45 million ice runway.
Scheduled operations at the Wilkins Aerodrome have been cut to just four flights over three weeks this summer because the runway surface keeps melting.
Launched with great fanfare by then Environment Minister Peter Garrett in 2008, the runway was intended to handle 20 to 30 flights a season, but the best season so far has had just 10.
