(SUN-SENTINEL) — If a police officer stops you for not using a sidewalk – where no sidewalk exists – can you still be sent to jail?

The answer is yes in some Broward County neighborhoods, local defense attorneys say.

Failing to use a sidewalk or a crosswalk – where one is provided – is not a crime, but lawyers for the Broward Public Defender’s Office say Fort Lauderdale police officers are using the traffic infraction as an excuse to stop and search people for drugs, mostly in the city’s low-income and minority neighborhoods.
