(ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES) — “American’s Beloved Gospel Singer” and Montreat resident George Beverly Shea celebrated his 103rd birthday on February 1, and released a new CD, an ultimate collection of his favorite hymns on January 24.
The Montreat resident added a second Grammy Award to his long list of musical accomplishments in 2011. Last year he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognized his vast contributions to gospel music. He won the first Grammy in 1965 for the album, “Southland Favorites.” At the Grammy Awards in 2011, Shea was among the oldest living persons to be honored by the recording academy.
