Bill Maher: Master of misogyny

Black columnist Lloyd Marcus has written:
“MILF is an acronym used in pornography for ‘Mother I’d Like to F—.’ Bill Maher called Sarah Palin MILF. Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a ‘dumb t–t.’ Bill Maher joked that Sarah Palin’s Down Syndrome baby was a result of Palin having sex with John Edwards. Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a C-word.
“President Obama phoned Ms. Fluke to find out if she was OK regarding the Limbaugh comment. To be consistent in his concern for women, shouldn’t President Obama give back the million-dollar contribution to his super PAC from Bill Maher, a serial vitriolic abuser of Sarah Palin, who to the best of my recollection is a ‘woman’?
“The liberal media are ignoring Obama’s blatant hypocrisy in accepting campaign money from Bill Maher. …”
On Page 1 of the Daily Mailer, columnist Bruce Thornton wrote:
“Monstrous hypocrisy of progressives … Take everybody’s exhibit No. 1, the HBO blowhard Bill Maher, who’s on record calling Sarah Palin a ‘c–t’ and inviting Jon Huntsman to ‘suck my d—.’ I don’t remember the president calling Palin or Huntsman to regret ‘that our political discourse has become debased,’ as his flack Jay Carney put it. Nor is anyone demanding that Obama-supporting super pac Priorities USA Action should return the million bucks Maher gave it.”
In the Weekly Standard magazine on March 5, John McCormack reported:
“In response to the media firestorm surrounding Rush Limbaugh’s insulting comments about Democratic activist Sandra Fluke (comments for which Limbaugh apologized), Kirsten Powers writes about the liberal men who have used misogynistic rhetoric without facing the same outrage. Powers notes that ‘the grand pooh-bah of media misogyny is without a doubt Bill Maher – who also happens to be a favorite of liberals – who has given $1 million to President Obama’s super PAC.’ She continues:
“Maher has called Palin a ‘dumb t–t’ and dropped the C-word in describing the former Alaska governor. He called Palin and Congresswoman Bachmann ‘boobs’ and ‘two bimbos.’ He said of the former vice-presidential candidate, ‘She is not a mean girl. She is a crazy girl with mean ideas.’ He recently made a joke about Rick Santorum’s wife using a vibrator. Imagine now the same joke during the 2008 primary with Michelle Obama’s name in it, and tell me that he would still have a job. Maher said of a woman who was harassed while breast-feeding at an Applebee’s, ‘Don’t show me your t–s!’ as though a woman feeding her child is trying to flash Maher. (Here’s a way to solve his problem: don’t stare at a strangers’ breasts). Then, his coup de grâce: ‘And by the way, there is a place where breasts and food do go together. It’s called Hooters!’”
“Former White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton, the man who runs Obama’s super PAC, did not reply when asked if he will be returning Maher’s $1 million donation.”
I’m reluctant indeed to write anything non-commendatory about Rush Limbaugh, who is my fellow talk-radio host on WCBM Baltimore. But I do believe he was very wrong to call her “a slut who wants to be paid to have sex,” and “having so much sex it’s amazing she can still walk” and “having sex so frequently that she can’t afford all the birth control that she needs.”
But Rush has “sincerely apologized to Ms. Fluke for what he admitted were the insulting word choices.” On both March 3 and the following Monday, he apologized. On Monday, he said:
“I acted too much like the leftists who despise me. I descended to their level, using names and exaggerations to describe Sandra Fluke. It’s what we have come to know and expect from them, but it’s way beneath me. It’s wrong, and that’s why I apologized, because I succumbed. I descended to their level. Don’t be mad at them or mad at her. Everybody here is being true to their nature except me. I am the one who had the failing on this, and for that I genuinely apologize for using those words to describe Ms. Fluke.”
Limbaugh had posted the apology to Fluke on his website, but Fluke told ABC she found it wanting.
“I don’t think that a statement like this, saying that his choice of words was not the best, changes anything and especially when that statement is issued when he’s under significant pressure from his sponsors, who have begun to pull their support,” she said.
I am unaware that Limbaugh has retaliated against any of these ad cancelers by asking his millions of devoted listeners to boycott these boycotters.
“The left, the media, is giddy that some advertisers have said they’re leaving the program, and I’m sorry to see them go,” Limbaugh explained. “They have profited handsomely from you. These advertisers who have split the scene have done very well due to their access to you, my audience, from this program. … Now they’ve chosen to deny themselves that access, and that’s a business decision, and it’s their alone to make. They’ve decided they don’t want you for their business anymore.”
Limbaugh said he’d replace those advertisers, noting, “I reject millions of advertising dollars each year, much to the chagrin of my hard-working sales staff … including General Motors. We don’t suppress the speech or voices of those with whom we disagree.”
Clear Channel’s Premiere Radio Networks Inc., which hosts Limbaugh’s program, is expressing unwavering support for Limbaugh, whose contract runs through 2016.
“The contraception debate is one that sparks strong emotion and opinions on both sides of the issue,” Premiere Radio Networks told the Associated Press. “We respect the right of Mr. Limbaugh, as well as the rights of those who disagree with him, to express those opinions.”
