Widely touted as a “kinder, gentler” alternative to Rush Limbaugh, former Governor Mike Huckabee’s talk radio show debuted in various markets this week. Huckabee is going head to head with Limbaugh, since his show also airs from 12-3 p.m.
However, Huckabee is already in hot water. The American Spectator’s resident expert on talk radio, Jeffrey Lord, thought Huckabee’s enthusiastic first caller sounded a bit … familiar.
Lord wrote: “In fact, ‘Mike from San Francisco’ turned out after some digging to be one Mike McVay, the senior vice president of programming for … wait for it … the Cumulus Media Network” – in other words, Huckabee’s boss, pretending to be an ordinary Joe, relieved to have an “alternative” to Rush. It will take a while for Huckabee to live that down.
Limbaugh himself declared this week that President Obama welcomed “chaos and unrest in the culture,” adding that the current economic and cultural situation in America is “a powder keg waiting to go off.”
Savage noticed that while his book is No. 3 on the bestseller list, the No. 1 spot is held by the latest tome by MSNBC’s “fanatical leftist” host Rachel Maddow.
He then declared, “If those willing to go out and buy a book are indicative of those willing to register and vote, then Obama wins by a nose” in November.
He’s been out of the news for a while, but President Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright, recently delivered an unhinged sermon that caught Michael Savage’s attention. Jeremiah Wright called Thomas Jefferson a “pedophile” and declared that “white supremacy drives world policy.”
After playing clips from Jeremiah Wright’s bizarre speech, Savage told listeners: “Every once in a while, things occur in the United States of America that leave you with your mouth hanging open.
“You just heard the ‘inner Obama,’” Savage declared. “You just heard the words that are no doubt spoken in the White House when no one is listening” (FREE audio).
He mourned the fact that “the Republican establishment has won, yet again,” then added “I think Newt Gingrich is losing it. … I don’t think he knows what he’s doing at this point.”
Having said all that, Levin called on his fellow conservatives to “pull out a victory for Mitt Romney.” The alternative was another four years of disastrous Obama policies, both foreign and domestic (FREE audio).
Not many talk radio hosts can boast guest lineups that include comedian Jackie Mason, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Terry Jones, the “Koran burning” pastor – who is now getting involved in the controversy surrounding the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case. However, that was just part of Aaron Klein’s on-air lineup this week.
Klein also shared the results of his investigation into the connections between the White House and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood (FREE audio).
Newt Gingrich told Laura that, with the departure of Rick Santorum, he is now the last true conservative in the race for the Republican nomination.
Ingraham also played some shocking audio clips, including one from a New Black Panther Party spokeswoman, calling on African-Americans to riot and murder white people. In another clip, President Obama addressed the White House “Economic Women’s Forum” and gave a speech Ingraham called blatant “pandering.”
With Mitt Romney’s nomination a virtual certainty, Glenn Beck responded by unveiling a strange new T-shirt design. The slogan “At Least He’s Not a Commy” (sic) is probably too awkward to catch on.
Jerry Bowyer at Forbes magazine praised Beck for exposing Obama’s ties to socialism and trying to alert Americans to the dangers posed by “progressives.” However, Bowyer added that Beck’s constant predictions of immanent doom were driving some members of his audience over the edge.
“A colleague of mine was advised by his psychiatrist to stop watching the shows because they were triggering unhealthy anxiety episodes in him,” Bowyer wrote.
And now, from the left side of the dial …
“The Hollywood left’s war on Mitt Romney is already underway,” noted Brian Maloney.
The Radio Equalizer blogger picked up on an interview director Rob Reiner had this week with progressive talk show host Stephanie Miller (FREE audio).
Reiner declared that “you’d have to be brain dead to vote for Romney.”
Apparently, Reiner isn’t gifted with a sense of irony or self-awareness – the entire country still knows him by his “All in the Family” nickname, “Meathead.”
