(HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS) — Annville-Cleona School Board’s removal of the children’s book “The Dirty Cowboy” from Cleona Elementary School “stinks of censorship,” two anti-censorship groups said in a letter to the school board this week.

The National Coalition Against Censorship and American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression say constitutionally protected material can be justified “only if it’s based on valid educational ground, and no such ground has been advanced in this case, nor could it be.”

An online petition calling for the book to be reinstated has gathered 253 signatures from residents and non-residents.
