When the news came out last week that Barack Obama had not corrected several different official literary biographies claiming he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia for a period of 17 years leading up to 2007, the Obama media reacted predictably.
“Those nasty birthers are at it again.”
“It was obviously just a typographical error.”
“Why won’t these people let go of this crazy conspiracy story.”
Is this the way the media would react if any other public figure had fraudulently misrepresented himself in the interest of selling books. I don’t think so.
I’m not an elected official. I have written a number of books. And I’m known as an Arab-American. Many people assume I was born in Lebanon or Syria, actually the homelands of my grandparents. I was actually born in Paterson, N.J.
But suppose for 17 years of my public life I had represented myself as born in Lebanon. One day I was outed by, let’s say, Media Matters. I suspect the same media that chuckled or yawned about the latest Obama revelations would have more to say about my lies than they did about the man sitting in the Oval Office.
Don’t you think that’s true?
Look, I don’t know where Obama was actually born. I have never claimed I did. I doubt very few Americans really know with 100 percent certainty whether he is, as the Constitution requires, a “natural born citizen.” How could they? The story keeps changing. The files are sealed. The documents are manufactured.
At the very least, Obama and those responsible for misrepresenting his biography in a commercial context committed a fraud. The other possibility is worse – that he committed a fraud against the American people and violated a principle tenet of the Constitution.
It’s also certain, from what we’ve learned, that Obama will say or do whatever is expedient in that moment. If it benefits him to be Kenyan-born to sell books, he will use it. If it benefits him to be born in Hawaii to become president of the United States, he will use that.
Those are about the only facts we really know about Obama’s life and character.
And why are Obama and his supporters so mystified as to the reasons Americans are confused about his life and background, when he himself has provided contradictory stories to the public ever since he came to our attention?
Think about that.
Those who questioned his nativity story beginning in 2008 were called racists for doing so. We were accused of only asking the questions because he was black.
Yet it was Obama and his associates who have been peddling different stories about his birth for decades.
This isn’t a matter of what “birthers” have done.
This isn’t a matter of a typographical error.
This isn’t about crazy concocted conspiracy stories.
Obama created this mess himself – by telling different stories to different people at different times.
This is not what Americans and the press should expect from people in high office. And the press usually exacts a little more flesh when such fraud is found. But not with Obama. He’s special. And anyone who doesn’t recognize that is more likely to be the target of harsh criticism and investigation than the inveterate liar who can’t seem to get his story straight.
Why can’t we just have a civil dialogue and discussion about what it means to be a “natural born citizen”?
Why can’t we see the real birth certificate or even get the state of Hawaii to affirm Obama was born there on Aug. 4, 1961, as he claims to Barack Obama, a Kenyan visiting student, and Stanley Ann Dunham, a woman too young to bestow natural born citizenship status on her son? Why can’t he open up his student records? Why doesn’t the Selective Service release his draft card? Why does he use a Connecticut Social Security number despite the fact that he has never resided in that state? How is one adopted by an Indonesian father without the original birth certificate reflecting that fact? How does one become an Indonesian citizen and regain “natural born citizen” status in the U.S.?
Does anyone reading this column doubt Obama attended college as a foreign student, just as the Chicago-area postman claims?
Isn’t the evidence mounting that Obama is still not telling us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about himself?
