My journalistic run-in with 'the clueless Carney'
Posted By Les Kinsolving On 07/30/2012 @ 7:52 pm In Commentary,Opinion | No Comments
Both the Weekly Standard and WND, among other news media, have published strong criticisms of White House press secretary Jay Carney, for his refusal to answer the following question by the White House’s most senior correspondent, Connie Lawn, of USA Radio Network:
“What city does this administration consider to be the capital of Israel – Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?”
Carney: I haven’t had that question in a while. Our position has not changed, Connie.
Q: What is the position? What’s the capital?
Carney: You know our position.
Q: I don’t.
Q: (Kinsolving joins.) No, no, she doesn’t know. She doesn’t know. That’s why she asked.
Carney: She does know –
Q: I don’t.
Q: (Kinsolving) She does not know. She just said she doesn’t know. I don’t know.
Carney: We have long – Les, I call on Christi. Go ahead.
This was followed by two questions and answers regarding gun control, after which I called out:
Q: (Kinsolving) Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?
Carney: You know the answer.
Q: (Kinsolving) No, I don’t know the answer. We don’t know the answer. Could you just give us an answer? What do you recognize – what does –
Carney:Our position hasn’t changed, Lester.
WND went on to report what I acknowledge in deep gratitude to WND Editor Joseph Farah, who thusly noted my efforts to extract an answer from the White House:
“WND White House correspondent Les Kinsolving doesn’t get the respect he deserves among his colleagues or in the Obama administration,” Farah said. “But this demonstrates the vital public service he provides by being there – even though he is seldom called upon by people like the clueless Carney.”
He added, “Let’s face it. Nobody knows what the administration’s position is on a simple matter of which city the U.S. recognizes as the capital of Israel – including the White House spokesman. But Kinsolving wouldn’t let him dodge this bullet. By his dogged persistence, he demonstrated to the entire world this administration is like a rudderless ship.”
The WND report continued, “The issue of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has surfaced periodically as Palestinians often refuse to acknowledge the city’s status.”
I spoke without Carney recognizing me for a question – as other White House correspondents have done on occasion.
I spoke out because I believe Israel is our closest ally in the entire Middle East.
I spoke out because of the colossal unfairness that Israel is the only nation in the world where the U.S. embassy is not in its capital city, Jerusalem. (The U.S. embassy is in Tel Aviv.)
This is due primarily to the pro-Arab U.S. Department of State.
How would Congress and President Obama react if Israel closed down its embassy in Washington, D.C., and relocated it in New York?
How would Congress and President Obama react if Israel’s Knesset (Parliament) were to announce:
“How many of these Americans, who criticize us for refusing to relinquish the comparatively tiny West Bank and Golan Heights, have also called upon the United States to return one-half of Texas to Mexico and one-half of New Mexico and Arizona to American Indian tribes?”
Consider the deep concern for, and strong support of, Israel by the vast majority of the millions of American Jewish voters.
How does the running-for-re-election Obama feel about his press secretary’s repeated refusal to express any support for Israel’s right to Jerusalem as its capital city – just 14 weeks before Election Day?
