(Eugene Register-Guard) — Recently, The Register Guard revealed that local food consumers have legitimate reasons not to rely on labeling alone when making food purchase decisions. For example, some food produced in China is labeled “organic” even though it is impossible to have any confidence in the “organic” claim. Another serious issue involving labeling inadequacies surrounds “halal certified” food products.
Under Islamic law, some food products are by their nature permissible (or “halal”) whereas others are “halal” only when certified as such. A banana, for example, is halal by its very nature and does not require certification. When a product must be “halal certified” to become permissible it must be inspected carefully and be subject to certain Islamic rituals.
