(BLOGS.WSJ) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who had ticked off Republican leaders and a number of Mitt Romney supporters by praising President Barack Obama’s handling of the recovery effort from superstorm Sandy, further strained his ties with fellow Republicans during a press conference Tuesday.

He was asked about a report in the Huffington Post that said he had skipped a rally Sunday night with Mr. Romney in Pennsylvania, only 20 minutes from Trenton.

Mr. Christie, who has been an active surrogate for Mr. Romney, explained that he’d been invited to the event prior to the storm, and personally told Mr. Romney that if Sandy was as strong as meteorologists were predicting, the governor would not be returning to the campaign trail.

“I said to him, ‘Listen, Mitt, if this storm hits the way I think it’s going to, I’m off the campaign trail from here to Election Day,” Mr. Christie told reporters. He said Mr. Romney responded, “Do your job, don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of things.”
