WASHINGTON – With Republican lawmakers on the retreat after the drubbing the party took in the Nov. 6 election, a petition calling for a full and complete congressional investigation into Benghazi-gate is being launched today on WND.
Congressional hearings are set to begin this week into one of the most colossal failures of national security – the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya that resulted in the deaths of four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens on the 11th anniversary of 9/11.
“There’s an old saying in politics: The cover-up is worse than the crime,”explained Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND. “Barack Obama’s administration has been in full cover-up mode since the day of this attack. It’s time for the truth to be told to the American people, but that is not likely to happen unless Congress demands it.”
The petition demands a full investigation of the Sept. 12, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
To: All members of the U.S. Congress:
Whereas, an organized militia of radical Islamic terrorists attacked the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, with military-grade weaponry and tactical precision on September 11, 2012, killing four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens;
Whereas, an attack on any American diplomatic compound anywhere in the world constitutes, officially and legally, an attack on United States territory;
Whereas, for a full two weeks following the attack, Barack Obama and his administration publicly and repeatedly claimed the attacks had been a spontaneous mob response to an anti-Islam video posted on YouTube – a claim now universally acknowledged to be false;
Whereas, Obama even went to the United Nations where, on September 25, he again blamed the Benghazi attack on the short YouTube video, calling it “crude and disgusting””and telling the General Assembly and the world, “I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video.”
Whereas, there is strong evidence that, even prior to the day of the murderous attack, requests were made for additional security for the Benghazi consulate – and were systematically denied;
Whereas, it is now undisputed that senior security officials, including Obama, were notified of the attacks as they were underway – over a seven-hour period of time;
Whereas, CIA and security agents were on the ground in Benghazi, but the public has been kept in the dark as to what happened to them and why they were not ordered to protect the consulate;
Whereas, a military drone flew overhead to video-monitor the unfolding events in real time, but the story of what actually happened has remained a closely guarded secret of the administration:
We, the undersigned, demand that Congress immediately undertake a full, impartial and complete investigation into the events surrounding the September 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya, and its aftermath. An attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission anywhere is an attack on American soil. Therefore, not to investigate and fully bring to light the truth about this attack would represent a betrayal of the American people and intolerable contempt for the U.S. Constitution which every Congress member has sworn a solemn oath to defend.
The questions about Benghazi just don’t seem to end. Why were requests for additional security turned down? What prompted the terror attack? Why were troops not readily available? How long did it take for them to respond? And on whose orders was it? Why has no one been taken into custody for the deaths?
According to reports from the Pentagon, it took more than half a day for the first military responders to arrive in Libya after the attack.
According to a report from the AP, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his top military adviser were told about the attack less than an hour after it started. But Panetta and other defense officials have repeatedly said that they did not have armed aircraft or military teams near Benghazi that could have gotten there quickly.
Sen. John McCain has been persistent in his questions, stating on Friday that the administration’s explanations so far don’t address the key questions.
