Flu shots are 'waste of taxpayer's money'

(London Daily Mail) The annual £120m flu vaccination campaign is a ‘waste of taxpayer’s money’ due to the protective effects of the jab being over-hyped, it has been claimed.

Between 2,000 and 4,000 people, mostly elderly, die of flu-associated illnesses in a mild year – and up to 20,000 die in years when there is a severe epidemic.

At present, the over-65s, pregnant women, front-line health workers and anyone with an underlying health condition, including asthma and diabetes, are offered flu jabs on the NHS.

But some experts are now arguing that the jab’s effectiveness has been exaggerated.
