The more people chant about their freedom and how free they are, the more loudly I hear their chains rattling.
~ George Orwell
From Arbeit Macht Frei to Reich Macht Frei
Last week’s article was originally titled “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work makes you free). It was derivative of one of many evil and ironic Nazi slogans the Jews would have been very familiar with before and during World War II (1933-45). If the Nazis were anything, they were masters of Groupthink and human nature and skilled in the various ways to manipulate human psychology and control of human behavior.
For example, rather than just killing all the Jews under Nazi control with bullets or bombs, the Nazis chose more “humane” and “scientific” methods to murder them, including using mobile units (vans and trucks) that dispensed carbon dioxide gas in a closed space. However, since those methods didn’t produce the body count the Nazis desired, under Adolf Eichmann’s “Final Solution” plan, concentration camps were built throughout Germany and parts of Europe under Nazi control designed to kill millions of Jews and other Untermensch (sub-humans) with the precision and efficiency of a car factory assembly line.
If that weren’t ghastly enough, imagine millions of otherwise cosmopolitan, highly educated people willingly going to these concentration camps. This would not be possible unless the German people had first been indoctrinated for decades in Realpolitick. Beginning under Germany’s first chancellor, Otto von Bismarck (1862-90), all German citizens were taught to accept unquestioned fidelity to government power – even above their own religious and moral teachings. Therefore, 70 years later it wasn’t only the slogan Arbeit Macht Frei that compelled the Jews to enter by the millions into over 1,200 concentration camps and sub-camps where a certain tortuous death awaited them, but an unspoken, unwritten variation of that benign, diabolical slogan I call, Reich Macht Frei – Government makes you free.
Only a nation stripped of their collective and substantive belief in God and deprived of meaningful religious devotion above the State could so willingly, voluntarily and in such incalculable numbers come to the train stations and be compelled to purchase a one-way ticket for yourself and your family into a hellish place that would virtually ensure certain death, yet cling to a stubborn fool’s hope: their abiding faith in government; the Germanic love of bureaucratic efficiency and faith in the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent State.
Reich Macht Frei.
Does government really make you free?
One of the schools I teach at is the National Paralegal College. The school has an active Facebook page, and the students and faculty are encouraged to post and comment on news items related to law and policy. A few days ago I replied to the posting of an NPC student, Tami Aguilera.
Tami: Should your personal religious beliefs have any weight in how you run your business in regards to how you wish to hold your insurance coverage for your employees? This company [Hobby Lobby] got denied by the Supreme Court to not allow the morning after pill be covered by the health insurance they offer. The Health and Human Services mandate is forcing them, or face a $1.3 million fine per day for non-compliance! Do you think this is some BS this company is facing or not?
Professor Ellis Washington: Yes, this is the path of all fascist societies, and the Obama administration is no different. For over 100 years, progressives have deconstructed religion and morality and demanded that everyone bow down to their omnipotent secular will. Obamacare was designed to make us all abortionists now regardless of religious conscience.
Professor Matt Bycer: I have no idea what Mr. Washington just said.
Louis Srote: Tami, are you actually advocating that an employer be mandated to provide contraception or abortifacient drugs via their health insurance plan, irrespective of their religious beliefs? That absolutely flies in the face of the First Amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; …” I hope I’m misinterpreting your posts, because if I’m not you really need to read chapter four of my new book. It specifically details the problems with government mandating this type of legislation. Not to mention what it does to our constitutional liberties.
Professor Stephen Haas: I think there are two different issues here. The issue of religious freedom does not bother me all that much. Employers are bound by all sorts of federal legislation. That they employ large numbers of employees means that they engage in commerce. Large employers cannot reasonably take advantage of the benefits that the market offers them and not be expected to comply with the standard rules that apply with every other employer in the marketplace. What does bother me about this provision in the PPACA [Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act] is that in this case, the government is using its commerce power to promote a specific policy that does not appear to be directly related to commerce or business. Is access to birth control services really the sort of thing the federal government should be mandating under its power to “regulate commerce among the several states”? Is guaranteeing people access to contraception a reasonable method of ensuring the free flow of commerce? Maybe, but it seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
Professor Ellis Washington: … Basically what I’m saying is that in America we have a First Amendment, which, among other things, protects individuals’ freedom of conscience. Freedom of religion means that the government CANNOT force you to practice a behavior or engage in controversial activities that are diametrically opposed to your religious faith. Obamacare, with its numerous mandates, commands all companies to provide to all their employees: 1) abortion services; 2) abortifacient drugs (e.g., RU-486); 3) same-sex marriage insurance; 4) birth control pills; 5) sterilization services, etc. …
Tami accuses people of faith of forcing their religion down the throats of others, but in reality it’s just the opposite. The government, through Obamacare, will control all health-care decisions for over 300 million people from cradle-to-grave – regardless of whether you want to be shackled under such a Marxist/socialist system that has failed everywhere in the world where it’s been tried and despite the fact that these policies I listed above (and hundreds of others) are blasphemous to most people of faith. The government doesn’t care, ergo … tragically, we are all abortionists now.
