Student detonates 'Mythbusters' bomb at school

TV show inspires device from common household chemicals

(FLORIDATODAY) — A Florida Institute of Technology student is accused of detonating a homemade device that he said he learned how to make by watching the Discovery Channel TV show “MythBusters.”

No one was injured in the early Sunday incident, police said.

At about 12:20 a.m., Melbourne police were called to the school at 150 W. University Boulevard.

“The ensuing investigation revealed that Christian Barnes Duke, age 19, possessed a destructive device that he made from common household chemicals and items,” a press release from Melbourne police says. Duke allegedly used the items to create a chemical reaction inside a plastic water bottle, which exploded because of building pressure and heat.
