Crist considers run for governor as Democrat

(PALMBEACHPOST) — Now that he has formalized his switch to the Democratic Party, former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist said Monday he’s weighing a 2014 bid for governor and, if he runs, would leave it “up to the people” to judge the sincerity of his partisan conversion.

Crist shocked no one when he announced to Twitter followers Friday night that he was “Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President @BarackObama!”

Included with the tweet was a picture of a beaming Crist and his wife, Carole, at a White House holiday reception with the former governor holding up a signed Florida Voter Registration Application form. She made the switch to the Democratic Party in 2011.

Crist was elected as a state legislator, education commissioner, attorney general and governor as a Republican and was mentioned as a potential running mate for John McCain in 2008. He called himself a “true conservative” during a bid for the GOP’s 2010 Senate nomination, but was widely seen as a moderate governor and fell behind Marco Rubio in the polls before dropping out of the Republican Party in April 2010 to pursue a no-party campaign for Senate.
