Regarded by many as the “Christian Oscars,” the annual Movieguide Awards show rewards the best family-friendly and spiritually uplifting movies and TV shows of the year.

You can watch the celebrities and VIPs arrive at the 21st annual show at the Universal Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Sign up now to watch WND’s exclusive livestream coverage of the red carpet event Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Movieguide Awards show honors the studio executives, producers, directors, actors and writers of its “Best of the Year” movies. Among Movieguide’s presentations are the Grace Award for Inspiring Acting and The Faith & Freedom Awards for movies and television programs that positively impact the world community. The John Templeton Foundation supports the $50,000 Kairos Prize for Spiritually Uplifting Screenplays and the celebrated $100,000 Epiphany Prizes for Film & Television.

A highlight of the awards show is Movieguide founder Ted Baehr’s highly anticipated annual statistical analysis based on Movieguide’s reviews. His analysis consistently shows studio executives and filmmakers that family-friendly, spiritually uplifting content can significantly increase the profitability of their movies.

Actor Dean Cain, best known for his role as Superman and Clark Kent in the series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” hosted last year’s red-carpet awards gala.

Baehr’s study last year showed that the most family friendly movies averaged more than $40.7 million per movie in 2011 in the U.S. and Canada. In contrast, the least family friendly movies with the most offensive, obscene or anti-family and immoral content averaged only about $19.8 million.

Movies with no sex, no nudity and no foul language earned the most money, on average, in 2011. In fact, the more sex, nudity or foul language in a movie, the less money it made.

“Audiences want wholesome content,” Baehr told actors, producers and gala attendees. “Negative values have consequences. They get people into self-destructive and other destructive behavior, and you’re paying the penalty for that. The taxes you are paying for people who have gotten into these problems are tremendous. Every kid has a $50,000 price tag on his head that he owes to the federal government to pay for somebody else’s illicit behavior.”

Last year, Movieguide’s No. 1 Family Movie of the Year was “Soul Surfer.” The Epiphany Prize winner for Most Inspiring Movie was “Courageous.” The Most Inspiring TV Program was “KJB: The Book That Changed the World.”

The Grace Awards for Most Inspiring Performances in Movies & TV went to Alex Kendrick for “Courageous” and Kirstin Dorn for “A Christmas Wish.”
