(SUN-SENTINEL) — Lauren Book learned at a young age the pain and perils of blindly trusting adults.
So, in the hopes of sparing children the horror she experienced at the hands of the family nanny, the Plantation sex abuse survivor has created Florida's first-ever, school-based prevention curriculum for kindergartners. Now, she is committed to getting it taught in as many schools as possible.
Book regularly visits elementary schools around the state to teach the program to kindergartners — and is planning a March 6 visit to Wilton Manors Elementary, where the "Safer, Smarter Kids" curriculum has been part of the lesson plans since January.
"I think it's really important to [get] to a place where prevention is as key as ABCs and 123s," said Book, 28, daughter of South Florida lobbyist Ron Book. "We're really trying to create a culture change."
