Concerned, gun-owning citizens who bothered to contact their elected representatives in Congress or at the state level experienced something similar over the last few weeks. If they contacted liberal Democrats or “moderate” Republicans, they received letters paying lip-service to the rights of “hunters” and “sportsmen,” replete with reassurances that their government in no way wishes to infringe on their Second Amendment rights. If these citizens lived in New York state, they then woke up to discover that Democrats, liberals and progressives of every stripe, in concert with RINO “moderates,” had rammed a new law down the voters’ throats after New York’s governor suspended the requirement for review and debate of the legislation.

In other words, when it comes to the subject of guns, liberals always lie. They lie when they say they do not want to take your firearms. They lie when they say they “respect” the Second Amendment, which they have redefined in their minds as some quaint notion that grudgingly allows fat white men to shoot deer. They lie when they say they understand the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They lie when they claim to be experts with guns, to be conversant with guns, to be casually familiar with guns.

If the Obama administration has a defining characteristic apart from its haughty, arrogant, autocratic insistence that the time for debate is over, that Americans agree with the president, and that you had better do as Obama says or you will make him angry, it is how brittle and defensive Obama becomes whenever he is criticized. George W. Bush had a tendency to ignore all criticism, as if it were beneath him to answer it. He ignored and otherwise failed to address lies and valid criticism of his presidency in equal measure, sometimes to his detriment. The Obama administration, by contrast, is constantly addressing even the smallest criticism of Obama, to the degree that it makes Obama seem childish. Multiple times, the libs have tried to implement White House hotlines and Twitter accounts devoted to reporting, “refuting” and condemning dissent. They do this while Obama whines in various interviews that only Rush Limbaugh and Fox News fail to toe his party line, lamenting that he does not completely control an already largely complicit news media.

It was no surprise, then, that with Obama making speech after speech about the need to ban and confiscate your guns (while “respecting” the rights of “sportsmen”), making it clear how much he hates and fears the possession of firearms by you little people, the White House lied and tried to claim that Obama is an avid skeet shooter. Never mind that the Second Amendment was not written to protect “sporting” firearms uses; never mind that most Americans could not give a good damn about trap or skeet; never mind that the claim was ridiculous on its face because Obama has never before mentioned this hobby, nor been seen to be doing it within the last four years.

No, claimed the White House, Obama likes to shoot skeet, which means he is just like you proles, you serfs, you bitter clingers with your guns and your Bibles, and therefore he does not really want to take your guns away.

The claim was met, rightly, with universal skepticism. It took the White House a little time to arrange for a photo shoot with Obama and an actual killing machine – excuse me, firearm – but they finally did, and they posted it on the White House’s Flikr account (because, while he may be a liar, Obama understands the value of social media and of modern technology when spreading propaganda). They even, as they always do, tried to assert some kind of executive privilege over the photo, forbidding the alteration of the picture in any way. The Internet immediately took that dare, producing multiple Photoshopped parodies of it.

They had much to work with. Obama holds a shotgun as if he’s never held a gun in his life. The fingers of his support hand are curled up over the lower barrel of the over-under, where a hot barrel could burn them. The stock is hovering over his shoulder, touching him only barely. He is supposedly shooting skeet, yet firing horizontally instead of at an incline. And he is ramrod straight despite the muzzle gases escaping the barrel, as if the photo were taken in the airless, frictionless world of high school physics test questions. How is it that Obama’s shotgun has no recoil? How did he fit in a skeet session after golfing all day?

We aren’t expected to believe it. Only the “low information voters,” the largely unemployed, uninformed, hopelessly stupid Americans who returned Obama to office are expected to believe it, because they are as ignorant of firearms as is Obama. But none of this is the point. The point is one of the many Photoshopped images, in which Obama’s shotgun has been digitally replaced with a Predator drone.

Obama has become synonymous with the notion of drone strikes. His administration has used them to good effect against many terrorists, igniting a sometimes hypocritical debate among his opposition as to whether American citizens abroad may be targeted for assassination by these flying machines. Obama’s supporters claim any fear he might use his robot death planes against American citizens on American soil is so much conservative paranoia – despite the fact that Obama’s Department of Homeland Security is stockpiling hundreds of thousands of rounds of anti-personnel handgun ammunition, while DHS and Obama’s supporters repeatedly define all political opposition to Obama as “domestic terrorism.”

The drone strike has become a running joke on prime-time sitcoms and in popular culture. It has been briefly eclipsed by the running joke of Obama as manly shooter. The flavor of both punch lines is the same. Behind the laughter is the very real concern that Obama cannot be trusted, that Obama is quite content to murder Americans without due process, and that Obama says one thing while doing another.

There’s nothing at all funny about that.
