When most people hear the name of Genghis Khan, they usually think of the head of the Mongolian Empire of the 13th century, the largest contiguous land empire in human history.
But now, a Brooklyn, N.Y., man with the same name has just been convicted of drug charges in America’s Empire State.
According to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe, 23-year-old Genghis Khan was found guilty in a jury trial of one felony count of criminal possession of a controlled substance, as well as a count of marijuana possession.
Khan was originally arrested with two others in April of last year while traveling on the New York State Thruway, in Clarkstown, N.Y.
During a traffic stop, state troopers found Khan in possession of approximately five ounces of cocaine as well as marijuana.
He faces a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison when sentenced on July 16.
The Rockland County Times says it’s “not known at this time if the name is the perpetrator’s given name, or if he changed it to Genghis Khan in honor of the historical figure, whom some geneticists believe has over 16 million living male descendants.”
It goes on to note: “Khan – the one from Brooklyn – had been charged with selling crack in 2010, in Rutland, Vt. One of his co-defendants in the Rockland case is from Rutland and a third from a nearby Vermont town. It appears Khan would transport cocaine between Brooklyn and Vermont, however police did not charge him with attempted sale in this case.
“Weapons charges were filed against Khan in April – the newspaper awaits information on whether those charges were dropped. The police had found a revolver in the car when the perps were initially pulled over.”
