The pursuit of political correctness has led to an Easter egg hunt without Easter and perhaps without eggs. And there’s not really a hunt.
Principal Lydia Davenport of Heritage Elementary School in Madison, Ala., has banned any activities related to religious holiday, in the interest, she says, of religious diversity.
The change may have been prompted by one parent.
“We had in the past a parent question us about some of the things we do here at school, so we’re just trying to make sure we respect and honor everybody’s differences,” Davenport told local television station WHNT.
Teachers at Heritage Elementary originally planned to have an “academic egg hunt” in which students would answer quiz questions placed in Easter eggs. But even eggs were deemed too closely related to Easter. Heritage School administrators came up with a compromise to use other kinds of shapes besides the shape of eggs.
It is OK for teachers to mention a bunny, just as long as it’s not the Easter Bunny?
“Kids love the bunny and we just make sure we don’t say ‘the Easter bunny’ so that we don’t infringe on the rights of others because people relate the Easter bunny to religion; a bunny is a bunny and a rabbit is a rabbit,” said Davenport.
WHNT reports many parents disagree with the decision to ban the word Easter.
One Heritage parent emailed: “I don’t get upset about too many things, but this upsets me. What is this world coming to? I am a Christian and proud to announce it. But even non-believers enjoy a good egg hunt. Kids need to enjoy being kids.”
WND attempted to contact the mayor of Madison for a reaction to the school’s banning of the word Easter, but as of yet, has not received a response.
WND also reached out to all of the town’s city council members and the local school board, who have also not yet responded.
The White House told WND it would have no comment on the story.
When asked if the White House had any plans to rename the annual Easter Egg Roll, the person who answered the phone said it would make an announcement if it were ever to make such a change.
