Is there an app for that?

At a time when the Obama administration is pressuring mortgage lenders to extend more loans to those with “weaker credit” – even individuals collecting public assistance – the Department of Housing and Urban Development has unveiled a new housing discrimination app for mobile devices.

Developed by Hewlett Packard and HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, HUD’s new housing discrimination application – app, in Apple jargon – is designed for the iPhone and iPad.

“Having this first fair housing mobile application equips people everywhere with the information they need to combat housing discrimination,” said John Trasviña, HUD assistant secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. “We are maximizing the latest technology to make the process for filing fair housing complaints faster and easier and arming our fair housing partners with the information they need to understand their fair housing rights and responsibilities.”

Civil Rights advocacy organizations, such as MomsRising, Illinois Department of Human Rights, Access Living, League of United Latin American Citizens, Asian Real Estate Association of America, National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, National Association of Real Estate Brokers, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, have all indicated an interests in using this new iPhone/iPad app to assist their members in understanding “their housing rights and industry to educate their members on their responsibilities.”

The app is available for free download at iTunes, making it that much easier to utilize the latest technology to report any incidents of housing discrimination:

“This app allows you to submit a claim of housing discrimination for review by Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. Your fair housing rights are protected under Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act). If those rights have been violated, you can use this App to file a claim of housing discrimination with HUD.”

With the new app available for instant reporting of housing discrimination available, the Obama administration is simultaneously “doubling down on the disastrous policy mistakes that led to the mortgage crisis and Great Recession by pressuring lenders to finance homes for people who can’t afford them,” according to Paul Sperry, a Hoover Institution media fellow and author of “The Great American Bank Robbery.”

Sperry told WND that under “federal orders issued by the Justice Department, the biggest mortgage lenders in the country – including Wells Fargo and Bank of America – are being forced to advertise in minority media and offer loans even to people on public assistance.”

He said the coercion placed on banks is severe: “They have to adopt minority-friendly loan programs over the next several years or face investigation for discrimination.”

The coercion comes “not just from FHA and Justice and HUD but from the entire regulatory complex of federal financial agencies – including the powerful new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”

Indeed, Attorney General Eric Holder has made clear that affirmative action has just begun.

“Affirmative action has been an issue since segregation practices,” Holder said. “The question is not when does [affirmative action] end, but when does it begin? … When do people of color truly get the benefits to which they are entitled?”
