Support for 9/11 Day of Prayer

I never dreamed when I wrote what I assumed would be a “throwaway” column last week calling for a day of national prayer and fasting on 9/11 that my plea would be met with an outpouring of enthusiastic support from thousands of people.
It clearly struck a chord.
I’ve been doing media around the clock ever since.
Pastors are telling their congregations about the plan.
Lay activists are talking it up in Bible studies.
Rabbis are writing to me expressing their support.
Jonathan Cahn, the author of the best-selling Christian book of 2012 and 2013, “The Harbinger,” says he’s thinks it’s a great idea. (His teaching was really the inspiration for the idea.)
And this week I was honored to learn that Rep, Michele Bachmann has issued a statement in support of the 9/11 Day of Prayer and Fasting – a statement she entered into the Congressional Record.
How’s that for an idea hatched less than a week ago that I honestly expected no one to hear?
I like what Mrs. Bachmann had to say in her statement: “For centuries America has been blessed by God. Americans today and in previous generations looked to God for guidance on both private and national designated days of prayer and fasting.
“At this time of national mourning, as we search for comfort in the aftermath of this loss of innocent life, we would be wise to consider afresh II Chronicles 7:14: ‘If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’
“I join together with other Americans who have called for September 11, 2013, to be set aside as a day for personal prayer, reflection and fasting, for ourselves and for our nation.
“As we humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways, we can take assurance from the Holy Scripture that God has promised to hear from heaven, will forgive our sin, and will heal our land.”
Many people are asking me why we can’t do something sooner.
My answer is always the same – you can.
You can prayer and fast any day of the week. It’s always a good idea to humble ourselves before God. You don’t need a special day. It’s just that an expression of heartfelt collective prayer by millions on 9/11/13 will be a sweet savor to our Lord.
The good news is there is another day of national prayer set for May 2, too. I support it. We all should.
But there’s more we can do while we gear up for a national event Sept. 11:
I have never been more persuaded that this kind of action is the only way we’re going to save America from disaster.
Forget about politics.
Politics is what got us into this mess.
Doing things man’s way is the problem.
It’s time to start listening to our Creator.
And our God gave us instructions for times like this.
Those instructions are recorded in II Chronicles 7:14.
Do you think it’s time to give them a try?
