Thatcher's Methodist roots at heart of funeral

(London Telegraph) The service, due to take place on Wednesday, is to be attended by 2,300 dignitaries and is expected to be the biggest since the death of the Queen Mother in 2002.

The choice of the Charles Wesley composition, reflects the wishes of the former prime minister that the faith passed down to her by her father, Alderman Alf Roberts, should be marked at the service on Wednesday.

Other pieces of music include John Bunyan’s 1684 hymn To Be a Pilgrim (He Who Would Valiant Be), the patriotic choice I Vow To Thee My Country and Psalm 84, set to the music of Johannes Brahms. The psalm is a poignant inclusion, as Lady Thatcher chose it to be played at the 2003 funeral of her husband, Sir Denis, at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, an institution with which she had a strong connection.
