Is 'anti-Semitism' merely a 'Jewish claim'?

Never again?

That was the catchphrase after the Holocaust wiped out most of Europe’s Jewish population a mere generation ago.

The world would never allow such an atrocity to happen, again.

But as a new form of virulent anti-Semitism sweeps through Europe and the world, history seems to be repeating itself.

The latest example is an editorial policy switch at the powerful BBC in which the word “anti-Semitism” has remarkably become a “Jewish claim.”

An example is a recent headline on the BBC’s website: “Labor peer Lord Ahmed suspended after ‘Jewish claims.’”

But the story had nothing to do with any allegations by Jews; it was about anti-Semitism.

When the BBC was challenged on its decision by a critic, the following response was received: “BBC: Thanks for your email and please accept our apologies for the delay in replying. We try and stick as closely as possible to the words used, so, in this case we used ‘Jewish claims’ in the short space available for headlines to summarize his comments.”

However, as someone who knows a thing or two about headline character counts, I can tell you that “Jewish claims” and “anti-Semitism” are both 13 characters. And the media are no longer working with limited print space for headlines or text, as they did in the newspaper days. They’re dealing with electronics – for which there is hardly a space crisis.

It’s worth pointing out the BBC has no trouble fitting the longer term “Islamophobia” into its headlines.

More to the point, the very phrase “Jewish claims” is patently anti-Semitic.

Anti-Semitism is not a matter of Jewish claims. It’s a matter of fact. It’s a matter of reality. For anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear, there is no question that real-world hatred of Jews is alive and well in the world today. It’s no more a matter of “Jewish claims” than anti-black racism is a matter of “black claims.”

Can you imagine if such a substitution were made by a major news organization anywhere in the world?

What kind of horrifying, loathsome prejudice must be rife at the BBC to permit such transparent excuse-making and bad judgment to reveal itself?

This is beyond political correctness. This is raw-meat Jew hatred.

What’s behind it?

Is it the growing power and influence of the Arab oil cartels that have invested in so much anti-Jewish and anti-Israel propaganda?

Is it a fear of Islamic terror that has cowed one of the most powerful media outlets in the world – one that happens to be government-owned?

Or is it that anti-Semitism itself has become so widespread in Europe and elsewhere that it now dominates the elite corridors of the media?

Let me say this as a newsman, an Arab-American, a former Middle East correspondent and a Christian: Anti-Semitism is not a “Jewish claim.” It happens to be one of the most pervasive and long-standing realities in the world. It led directly to the Holocaust that ended for the whole world to see 68 years ago. It’s on the rise, again, particularly on the same continent.

As a new book by the highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence defector to the West points out, the new anti-Semitism was a deliberate creation of Communist disinformation following the genocide in Hitler’s Germany.

If you want an education on this insidious disease known as “anti-Semitism,” treat yourself to “Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategy for Undermining Freedom, Attacking Religion and Promoting Terrorism,” by Ion Pacepa and Ronald Rychlak. It tells, among other startling disclosures, how the Soviet bloc planted 4,000 agents of influence in the Islamic world, armed with hundreds of thousands of copies of the most infamous anti-Semitic book in history, to fan the flames of ancient Arab resentments against the U.S. and Israel and sow the seeds of anti-Semitism that would later bloom in the form of violence and terror toward Jews and Christians.

That campaign appears to be working still – even in the hallowed corridors of the media elite.
