Man killed dribbling soccer ball from Seattle to Brazil

(OREGON LIVE) — The driver who struck and killed a Seattle man dribbling a soccer ball to the World Cup match in Brazil is in the Lincoln County Jail on accusations of criminally negligent homicide.

Scott Van Hiatt, 52, of Neskowin was arrested Monday and is being held on $50,000 bail in the Lincoln County Jail pending arraignment Tuesday. Lincoln County deputy district attorney Elijah Michalowski said a grand jury indicted Van Hiatt last Thursday.

Criminally negligent homicide is a Class B felony that carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

According to Oregon court records, Van Hiatt has numerous traffic and traffic-related violations and infractions, including convictions for giving false information to police; failure to drive on the right side of the road; speeding and driving uninsured.
