(Belleville News-Democrat) A plan to capture and kill geese has been scrapped at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville after strong opposition from the university community.

On Wednesday, the chancellor’s council announced plans for a “charity harvest” through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to reduce the goose population on campus. SIUE’s geese are seen throughout the campus, regularly walking across the quad and especially in the areas around the lake.

Spokesman Doug McIlhagga said there had been 15 documented instances of aggressive behavior by geese since March at the on-campus Cougar Village apartments.
