(FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM) AUSTIN — The Texas House early today voted 97-33 to give preliminary approval to a hot-button package of abortion restrictions, prompting an angry backlash among hundreds of abortion-rights activists who descended on the State Capitol to protest the measure.

House debate on the legislative package extended well past midnight as unified Democrats offered a series of unsuccessful amendments in an attempt to derail the bill during the remaining two days of the Legislature’s special session.

Angry shouts of “boo” and “shame” rained down from a gallery packed predominately by abortion-rights supporters after the House vote. A final House vote was expected just a few hours later as the Legislature’s Republican majority sought to push through the measure before Tuesday’s adjournment.
