A brand-new ad campaign that’s sure to raise some eyebrows features a young Australian couple being informed their unborn baby is going to be a lesbian.
In the YouTube video, a pregnant woman and her mate are at an ultrasound examination, viewing their baby in the womb on an electronic screen.
“Well, everything seems to be coming along fine,” the ultrasound technician tells the couple. “Now, would you like to know what you’re having?”
“We would,” the woman says.
“You’re having a lesbian,” the technician tells the couple.
The couple then smiles broadly, reacting positively to the news.
“A lesbian!” says the overjoyed mom-to-be.
A captioned message appears on screen stating: "Any child can be born gay. So marriage equality is every family's issue."
The TV spot is paired with a similar billboard campaign in Queensland, Australia.
It features the smiling woman baring her pregnant belly, with the slogan, "Congratulations, you're having a lesbian."
Shelley Argent, a spokeswoman for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays which produced the campaign says its purpose is to gain support from mainstream families to back same-sex marriage, claiming homosexuals are "born that way."
"Being lesbian or gay is not a choice," she told News.com.au. "It's got nothing to do with culture or parenting skills. It's just the way you are. You're born that way."
The campaign was initially created by Steve Minon, a freelance advertising creative director.
He indicated the ads are "designed to get people thinking, and challenge them a little.
"We're trying to point out to any family that marriage equality can be your number one priority, without your knowing about it."
