(THE SCOTTISH SUN) — Twitchers spent two awesome hours watching a rare bird in flight — before it crashed into the blades of a wind turbine and dropped “stone dead”.
Birdwatchers from around the country dashed to the Outer Hebrides to catch a glimpse of the the world’s fastest flying bird — the white-throated needletail.
It has been spotted in the UK only EIGHT times in 170 years — but hours after reaching the isle of Harris, shocked fans watched the “beautiful” creature perish.
John Marchant, 62 a project coordinator for the British Trust for Ornithology, joined the trek to the island from Norfolk. He said: “We were absolutely over the moon and thrilled to see the bird. We watched it for nearly two hours.
“While we were watching, it suddenly got a bit close to the turbine and then the blades hit it.
