The anti-religious professor of religion

Posted By Les Kinsolving On 07/22/2013 @ 8:20 pm In Commentary,Opinion | No Comments

From Fox News, Religion Dispatches, BizPac Review Online and CampusReform.org, I received emails on July 15 with grim news about my alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania.

BizPac’s Tom Tillson reported:

“While those on the left look to place blame for George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, a radical professor said it’s because ‘God is a white racist’(!)

“In an editorial published on Sunday, Anthea Butler, a religious professor at the University of Pennsylvania, proclaimed God is ‘a white racist god with a problem.’”

She wrote, “God ain’t good all of the time. In fact, sometimes, God is not for us. As a black woman in a nation that has taken too many pains to remind me that I am not a white man, and am not capable of taking care of my reproductive rights, or my voting rights, I know that this American god ain’t my god. As a matter of fact, I think he’s a white racist god with a problem. More importantly, he is carrying a gun and stalking young black men.”

BizPac continued, “Butler, who accused Wal-Mart of being sharecroppers and slave owners earlier this year, acts like the country is still in 1950s Mississippi when she said ‘most good conservative Christians in America think … whatever makes them protected, safe, and secure, is worth it at the expense of the black and brown people they fear.’

“‘Their god is the god that wants to erase race, make everyone act ‘properly’ and respect, as the president said, ‘a nation of laws’; laws that they made to crush those they consider inferior,’ she continued. …

“‘Is God the old white male racist looking down from white heaven, ready to bless me if I just believe the white men like Rick Perry who say the Zimmerman case has nothing to do with race? …

“‘As a historian of American and African-American religion, I know that the Trayvon Martin moment is just one moment in a history of racism in America that, in large part, has its underpinnings in Christianityand its history.’”

When I telephoned both the University of Pennsylvania’s director of media relations and its alumni association, I was referred to the office of the provost. But from this office, which I was able to reach, I received a polite but emphatic refusal to comment.

This indicates the university’s unwillingness to do anything at all about “religion” professor Butler – who claims that God is a white racist.

That, in turn, indicates that all alumni of Penn who join me in concluding that this is utterly appalling should notify Penn that they are withdrawing all financial support – as well as the enrollment applications of any of their offspring – until Penn purges itself of this incredibly anti-religious professor of religion.

At the same time, I am wondering why, with all the coverage of Butler on the Internet, I have missed any such coverage in the Washington Post and the New York Times.
