(SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS) — The Harker School, the 120-year-old private school that’s evolved into a science-technology powerhouse, opens its doors next month to preschoolers — as long as their parents can afford to pay $22,000 a year.

The cost equals about 1½ years of tuition and fees at the University of California, or more than 2½ times the average annual cost of child care in the state.

But Harker preschool is to mere day care what Yale is to community college.
