Colin Powell: Zimmerman verdict 'questionable'

(NYDAILYNEWS) — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell called the verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman, the Florida man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, “questionable” Sunday.

But Powell, appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation” also added that he felt the acquittal of Zimmerman, a neighborhood-watch volunteer who had been accused of killing Martin, an unarmed black teenager, won’t have a lasting impact on U.S. politics.

“I think that it will be seen as a questionable judgment on the part of the judicial system down there (in Florida), but I don’t know if it will have staying power,” Powell said of the case that gripped the U.S. and fueled questions about race in the country. “These cases come along, and they blaze across the midnight sky and then after a period of time, they’re forgotten.”
