This stunning rendition of the classic hymn “Amazing Grace” comes from Il Divo, the unique creation that includes Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, baritone Carlos Marin from Spain, the French pop artist Sebastien Izambard and tenor David Miller from the U.S.
They came together in 2003 when music producer Simon Cowell sought four talented individual singers who could come together and create more than the sum of their separate talents.
They’ve been honored at the Classic Brits at the Royal Albert Hall, and they’ve sold more than 25 million albums, with 150 gold and platinum discs, and have sold more than two million concert tickets.
They’ve posed a problem, however, for critics and others who insist on finding a box in which to put them, as their collective backgrounds include opera, classical voice training, heavy metal, pop music and musical theater.
The famous hymn is from John Newton, a slave ship captain who later repented of his activities and came to be a standard bearer for the Christian church of his generation.
This version has been heard nearly eight million times online.
The full lyrics, which are not always included in every performance:
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.
