Two polar opposites on the world stage during the war-torn 1940s were Iosif Stalin and Pope Pius XII – the former, one of the most conscienceless mass-murdering tyrants of all time, and the later, one of most revered figures of his day, whose role in counteracting both communism and Nazism was unparalleled.
Despite the nonsense about Pius being “Hitler’s pope” – which the new book “Disinformation” proves beyond all doubt was the result of a massive Soviet disinformation campaign – in reality Pius was greatly admired, with Winston Churchill calling him “the greatest man of our time” and Albert Einstein writing, “Only the Church protested against the Hitlerian onslaught on liberty. Up till then I had not been interested in the Church, but today I felt a great admiration for the Church, which alone has had the courage to struggle for spiritual truth and moral liberty.” Even the chief rabbi of Rome and his wife, Israel and Emma Zolli, converted to Catholicism, with Zolli adopting the Christian name Eugenio, to honor the man who, according to him, had done so much to protect the Jews during the war: Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Pacelli.
Pius having been the biggest of all thorns in Stalin’s side prompts the question: Since Stalin relied on assassination to neutralize virtually every other threat, rival and enemy, including Leon Trotsky, did he ever attempt to assassinate Pope Pius?
Such a theory has apparently never been put forth, let alone bolstered with compelling evidence – until now.
Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, the highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence official ever to defect to the West, has written a brand new, comprehensive analysis contending exactly that – that Stalin, incensed at Pius’s role in encouraging resistance to communism in the largely Catholic nations of Eastern Europe, hatched an elaborate plot to assassinate the pope.
Pacepa, along with historian and law professor Ronald Rychlak, wrote “Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategies for Undermining Freedom, Attacking Religion, and Promoting Terrorism,” released this past summer by WND Books. The highly acclaimed book deconstructs the elaborate and maniacal Soviet disinformation campaign that “framed” Pius as a collaborator with Hitler – when the truth was just the opposite.
Alongside the book, WND Films released a companion film documentary by Emmy-winning filmmaker Stan Moore, titled “Disinformation: The Secret Strategy to Destroy the West.”
The groundbreaking new article by Pacepa, titled “A plan to assassinate Pope Pius XII?,” will be published on WND.com as a world exclusive Wednesday, Oct. 8 – the 55th anniversary of Pius’s death.
