(San Francisco Chronicle) President Obama’s nomination of San Francisco Deputy City Attorney Vince Chhabria to a federal judgeship won Senate Judiciary Committee approval Thursday on a divided vote, with one Republican criticizing Chhabria’s defense of the city in cases involving handguns and same-sex adoptions.

The committee sent the nomination to the Senate floor on a 13-5 vote, with three Republicans joining the panel’s 10 Democrats in support of Chhabria. The nominee, a UC Berkeley Law School graduate and former Supreme Court clerk, has worked for City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s office since 2005 and supervises its work in appeals courts.
