Think you’ve heard a lot about Obamacare already? The arbitrary cancellation of policies, the high price hikes, the stupendous co-pays and deductibles, the fact that you can’t keep your doctor, your hospital, your plan, or your medications?
Just wait for the 2014 election season.
In fact, don’t bother waiting; it’s already under way.
And there is expected to be a slugfest over the president’s singular Oval Office accomplishment, the Affordable Care Act.
Experts say Obamacare will be central to many election races, and Americans for Prosperity, the nation’s largest grassroots advocate for health care freedom, already has launched some of its television ads, as it describes, “holding lawmakers accountable for their support of Obamacare.”
One ad targets Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan, who supported Obama’s massive restructuring of the nation’s health care system.
The ad explains: “It’s the lie of the year – if you like your health care plan, you can keep it. At least 140,000 Minnesotans will lose current health care coverage. People like Randy Westby.”
The ad explains how Westby got a notice that his health insurance was being canceled because of Obamacare.
He noted the three heart attacks he’s had in six years.
“Health care is essential,” he said. “My life depends on it.”
Americans for Prosperity said it also is launching an ad campaign in New Hampshire.
The group explains, “This is the latest wave of an ongoing effort that has spent more than $16 million educating citizens on where their representative stands on the president’s disastrous health care law. The latest ad effort takes Rep. Nolan, Minn.-8, and Rep. [Ann] Kuster, N.H.-2, to task for voting in support of Obamacare.”
“Months after the problematic rollout, Americans are starting to feel the true impact of Obamacare,” said AFP President Tim Phillips. “They’re getting less choice, more problems and higher insurance premiums. Politifact rated President Obama’s broken promise the ‘lie of the year,’ and yet some politicians continue to stand by this law that is hurting the very people it was supposed to help.
“As millions of Americans lose the health plans they were promised they could keep, it’s time for lawmakers to stop thinking about politics, start thinking about people, and put a stop to this law,” he said.
Time reported earlier that one analyst concluded Democrats would need to win 42 of 43 competitive races in 2014 to capture the U.S. House.
And the magazine pointed out that in at least three House races Obamacare may be the controlling issue – and a negative for the Democrat.
Those would be in New Hampshire’s 1st District, where Democrat Carol Shea-Porter is being challenged by former Manchester Mayor Frank Guita. The National Republican Congressional Committee already has released a radio ad there ripping Shea-Porter’s support for Obama’s health care plan.
Time said a second district that likely would be decided by Obamacare is Arizona’s 1st District, where Ann Kirkpatrick is being challenged. And the third location is New York’s 24th District.
There, Democrat Dan Maffei is running for re-election by making clear he doesn’t like Obamacare’s current provisions.
The National Review Online noted that another group also has launched ads focusing on Democrat support for Obamacare.
“The 30-second killer ad … goes after Jeanne Shaheen, the first-term Democratic senator from New Hampshire who is like to face former GOP Sen. Scott Brown next year.”
It shows Shaheen repeating Obama’s famed “If you like your insurance you can keep it” lie.
“Next November, if you like your senator, you can keep her. If not, you know what to do,” the ad explains.
“Obamacare’s growing unpopularity makes the ad’s message dangerous for any Democrat,” wrote political blogger Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post.
“You have a very scary situation for Shaheen – and any other Democrat, which is almost all of them, on the record supporting the ACA. Get used to this ad. You are going to see it thousands of times – in various forms – before 2014 is over.”
